July Summer Reading Programs for Kids and Teens

Oceans of Texture Clay Exploration Take-home Kits for Kids ages 8-12, through July 30. With the summer reading theme of “Oceans of Possibilities” in mind, children (ages 8 -12) are invited to imagine life under the sea and create a pinch pot planter and a mini coral reef with local artist Sarah Haze. Families can pick up their play-along activity kits from the library between July 1 and 7, then access instructional YouTube videos to create your project at your own pace from home. Completed projects can be returned for firing in a kiln by July 30. Fired work will be displayed at the library and can be picked up anytime between Aug. 1 and Aug. 31. Each clay kit is designed to make two projects. Supplies are limited. Sign up in advance to reserve yours at https://bit.ly/CPL_SummerCeramics22.

Summer Storytime & Craft at Stoddard Park (K-4th Grade) 2 p.m. Fridays through Aug. 19. Join librarians from the Chatham Public Library, Canaan Library and New Lebanon Library for stories, songs, and crafts at this Summer’s Storytime and Craft Program at Stoddard Park in Canaan. This program will be held outdoors, weather permitting, and registration is not required.

Shadow Puppet Workshop (Ages 7-12) 2-3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, July 18 through July 21. Join Ms. Becky in this hands-on workshop where you’ll learn the art of shadow puppetry. With just a few recycled and craft materials you can make puppets and a stage to tell your own story. Registration is required at bit.ly/CPL_Summer22

Kids Science: Bubble Trouble Storytime & STEAM Activity 10:30 a.m. July 22. Join Talk! Read! Sing! Columbia for a special storytime and bubble STEAM activity at the Library. No registration required.

Jack and the Beanstalk Puppet Show (Ages 3-8) 3-4 p.m. July 25. Fee! Fi! Fo! Fum! Find out what you get when you mix a cow, three magic beans and one giant beanstalk in this classic fairy tale performed by the Puppet People. Performance will take place in the Chatham Middle School gymnasium. Registration is required at bit.ly/CPL_Summer22

Mad Science “Life in the Sea” Science Workshop (Ages 6-10) 3:30-4:30 p.m. July 28. Mad Science of the Capital District visits the Library for an interactive “Life in the Sea” workshop. Learn about the ocean’s diverse life forms – from plankton to whales! Discover underwater habitats and learn how humans can help protect ocean life. Registration is required at bit.ly/CPL_Summer22

Paper Beads (For Teens/Tweens) 2 p.m. Aug. 1 and Aug. 3. Paper beads are one of the oldest crafts known on the African continent. Women of the villages generally make the paper beads from magazines that they find. On Aug. 1, learn how to roll the paper into beads. Then on Aug. 3, design a necklace or bracelet using the beads you created. Register for all the Teen and Tween Craft Programs at bit.ly/CPL_SummerTeens22

Shake & Shout Toddler Storytime 10:30 a.m. July 20 and 27. Join others in a lively story time outside as you sing, dance & read a book together. For ages: 2 to 4. No registration is necessary for this weekly program.

Preschool Storytime 10:30 a.m. July 15, 22 and 29. Friday Storytime moves outdoors (weather permitting) this summer. Join Miss Becky for stories, songs and a take-home craft. No registration required for this weekly program. In the event of inclement weather, this program will meet indoors in the children’s room.

Cookbook Club 6 p.m. July 27, Aug. 31, Sept. 28. The Cookbook Club, hosted by Julie Delisle, returns in person this summer on the last Wednesdays of each month.So many cookbooks, food blogs, and recipe websites, how can you try them all? Join the Cookbook Club! Each month, the club will pick a different cookbook, take on a variety of recipes, and meet for a potluck on the library lawn to discuss and savor the results. (In the event of inclement weather, event will move indoors to the Library’s community room.) July 27 - Simply Julia by Julia Turshen; Aug. 31 - Ottolenghi Simple by Yotam Ottolenghi; Sept. 28 - Dining In by Alison Roman. Adult Craft Night: BYO Craft 6-7:30 p.m. July 25. Meet new people and explore your creative side. For July, bring whatever projects you’re working on from home to share or explore a new medium using the Library’s art supplies. Columbia-Greene Workforce NY Outreach Appointments 10 a.m.-2 p.m. July 26. Calling local job seekers and students! Columbia-Greene Workforce NY consultant Ellen Sullivan will be visiting the Library to share information about Workforce NY’s employment training and career counseling resources. Intro to Google Tools: Create and Edit Questionnaires and Surveys with Google Forms 1 p.m. July 26. This monthly program series is designed to help participants gain basic computer skills and access free online tools designed by Google. The interactive workshops will be held indoors at the Library. Space is limited and masks are required for all program participants. Advance registration is required at bit.ly/CPL_ComputerBasics

Aging: There’s No Place Like Home Info Session 10 a.m. Aug. 2. Join the Neighbors of Northern Columbia County for an informational meeting about their work and services available to area residents. The mission of this member-supported nonprofit is to help seniors age and thrive in their homes by providing volunteer services such as transportation, minor home repairs, pet care, and social activities. This event will take place outside on the library lawn. Rain date is 10 a.m. Aug. 4.

Hudson Valley Chamber Musicians Concert in Stoddard Park (All Ages) 6:30 p.m. Aug. 4. Join the Canaan, Chatham and New Lebanon libraries for an evening of free music at Stoddard Park in Canaan featuring the Hudson Valley Chamber Musicians. Registration is not required for this all-ages event.

Mah Jongg Club 10:30 a.m. Mondays and 2 p.m. Wednesdays. Join the Mah Jongg renaissance. Fully-vaccinated players are welcome to meet upstairs at the Library every Monday and Wednesday. Absolute beginners, email the Library at chathampubliclibrary@chatham.k12.ny.us for more information about scheduling a 90-minute lesson.

Memoir Group on Zoom 10:30 a.m. July 5 and July 19. The Memoir Writers come from a wide range of life experience, and gather online to share and hone their work. Fiction and poetry writers are welcome, too. Contact the Library for more information. Everyone has a story – share yours.

Ukulele Jam 10:30 a.m. July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. After spending the winter months off-site in Valatie, the Ukulele Jam is now back at the Library. All ages are welcome to the Ukulele Jams, led by Carmen Borgia. Ukes will be available, including several you can borrow to take home.

Health Care Navigator 1-4 p.m. July 14. Navigators assist individuals, families, small businesses and small business employees in Columbia and Greene Counties with shopping for, comparing, and enrolling in quality affordable health insurance, including Medicaid and Child Health Plus, through New York State of Health: the Official Health Plan Marketplace. Navigators can also assist with applying for financial assistance to help pay for coverage. Navigator services are free of charge.
